At a time when it faces growing pressures from human activities, ‘Further South’ will present Antarctica as a contemplative realm that connects at the deepest level with what it means to be human and to explore.
Spanning three decades from the end of the nineteenth century to the inter-war period, the exhibition will bring together for the first time over 200 of the most significant and visually arresting photographs brought back from Antarctica during that period. Drawn from leading polar and institutional archives in Europe, Australia and the United States, they will be thoughtfully assembled and supported by historical film extracts and quotes drawn from expeditionary accounts to achieve an exhibition that is informative, immersive and inspirational.
For Salto Ulbeek, ‘Further South’ represents the culmination of more than a decade’s work to preserve, publish and renew our appreciation of early Antarctic photography. For the archives and institutions with which it collaborates, it is an opportunity to share some of their most precious collections and to draw attention to their significance through an exhibition that will highlight the shifting dynamics between human motives and the natural environments.
